un-Labour Day

In our house we have a tradition... the last long weekend of the summer is called un-Labour Day. During un-Labour Day weekend, we pay homage to chill, relaxation and sloth. It's a wonderful holiday. There are no chores on un-Labour Day weekend, and very rarely do those who celebrate it feel the need to get out of their jammies. While we have kept
this holiday more strictly in the past, we did our best this weekend. We did have a few sojourns out of the house (Friday, deck time with the girls; Saturday, Ben and Colleen's wedding, an incredibly beautiful affair, and since we were just guests and didn't have to do anything it fit within the confines of the un-Labour Day rules; and on Sunday, a lovely family bbque for Micah's 5th birthday!) However, even with these outings, we managed to observe un-Labour Day quite well. There was a lot of time spent watching bad TV movies, lounging around with Sam, and general R&R. My two sports nuts watched football, cheering Edmonton on and wearing their Eskie's jerseys. I have to admit that I did do a load of laundry last night, although Steve quite sternly reprimanded me, reminding me of the true meaning of un-Labour Day. In all the hustle and bustle, I had got so wrapped up in the commercialism of the household cleaning products industry I had forgotten what this special weekend is really all about.
So, now we feel refreshed and invigorated, ready for what the fall has to bring. Even though the day after today doesn't hold the same significance it once did during school days, it still feels more like the beginning of the new year than Jan 1 does most years. I think that's because the lazy days of summer are over, consumated with the laziest weekend of all, and the brisk days of fall are on our doorstep. Although I feel slightly wistful, I do love the way that fall feels... fresh, crisp, and energizing.
Anyways, I better quit typing. This has been far too much work for the day.

Don't work too hard. But nice to see you've got some pics going on. Good to un-labour with you at colleen and ben's. I felt bad for steve though, at one point he was without a partner on the dance floor during "girls just want to have fun".

Sounds like un-labour day is a great idea! You should come visit sometime. Feel free to bring Sam. ;-)
